The Festival Hall in Erl has the world's largest orchestra pit
The Festival Hall was designed by Delugan Meissl Associated Architects in Vienna. It has over 862 seats (732 in the stands and 130 mobile seats in the area of the orchestra pit), and the largest orchestra pit in the world (160 m²). The total usable space is 7,000 m². The architecture of the Festival Hall respects the existing Passion Play House and the surrounding Tyrolean mountain landscape in a special way: in summer when the Tyrolean Festival Erl or the passion plays are taking place in the light-coloured Passion Play House, the dark facade of the Festival Hall blends into the dark forests in the background and allows the Passion Play House to stand out.
